Advertising History

An Ode To The Real Life Peggy Olson

… Instead of blogging about the same old Clinique Dramatically Different Cream, I thought I would blog about things that you probably do not know but might be interested in. As you know, this section of my blog is dedicated to advertising history, vintage advertising & gender roles in the past. Today I decided to write an ode to Jane Maas. The one and only real-life Peggy Olson.

You might not know that one of the greatest copywriters of all time is Jane Mass. Jane who? Jane what? Trust me, you will know what I am talking about in 2 seconds. Jane Maas – while working for  Ogilvy & Mather  – created the famous “I ♥ NEW YORK“ slogan which can be found everywhere. On everything. In every country.
You might know the series Mad Men and if you do not know it, you should definitely stop everything and watch it. In that series, they actually pretended that a man invented the world-famous slogan, but like most of the things in history, it was invented by a woman. Nevertheless, Mad Men is a great show which represents fictional business life at Madison Avenue during the ’60s or in other words makes you wanna work in advertising using a typewriter in New York City.

A few years ago I bought a few “used vintage books” over Amazon and one of the books was written by Jane Maas. When the books arrived I was feeling very fancy because I finally had a few vintage books, so I opened the Jane Maas book and what was inside? Exactly, it had a short handwritten text and her signature in it. I must treasure that book forever.
If you are also interested in Jane Maas, but do not know how to get your hands on a vintage copy, you could just buy her current book: Mad Women, which tells the other side of life in Madison Avenue during the 1960s.

So the next time someone asks you who your role-model is, don’t say Kim Kardashian, say, Jane Maas.
