What Is High Myopia And How Can It Be Treated?

Today we will be exploring Myopia and understanding What Is High Myopia And How Can It Be Treated? As someone who has been living with High Myopia all my life, I have gathered quite a lot of information about the topic from doctors, as well as different journals, articles, and books. With this blog post, I hope to make it easier for those of you that may be new to High Myopia.

What Is My Prescription?

Weirdly enough, I am highly myopic on my right eye only. My prescription on my right eye is -8.25 while my left eye has a prescription of +0.25. And in case you are wondering, yes – that makes getting glasses very difficult.

What Is Myopia?

Myopia is also known as Nearsightedness, meaning that you can see in front of you, but the further away an object is, the blurrier it becomes. The big difference between a normal eye and a myopic eye is that the light focuses in front of the retina, instead of on it. Usually, the myopic eye is shaped like a rugby ball, as opposed to a healthy eye that is round. People suffering from High Myopia should not skip eye doctor appointments and stay on top of their eye health, as they are – but don’t have to be – at a greater risk to suffer from retinal detachmentcataracts, and glaucoma.

Normal vs Myopic Eye

Eye Specialists In London

If you live in London as I do, I recommend that you do not get your eye test done at a high street chain optician, as often, the opticians will not be too familiar with High Myopia. Bear in mind that my case is a special one and that I am speaking from my own experience and that there may well be a great optician that is not a specialist that will be able to get your prescription right.

I personally have gone to every option and every eye hospital in the city and my two best – and most accurate – experiences have been at the two following places:

Moorfields Eye Hospital

Address: 162 City Rd, London EC1V 2PD

Website: moorfields.nhs.uk

While we are speaking about Moorfields, I just wanted to add that if you are able to, you can help support Moorfields, or to make a donation, visit the Moorfields Eye Charity website.

Zachs Eye Clinic

Address: 30C Warren St, London W1T 5NF

Website: www.zackseyes.co.uk

I only found out about Zacks Eye Clinic last year and I am very happy that I did. The clinic specialized in complex eye prescriptions like mine. The team is excellent and well educated in difficult eye conditions. The eye test is extensive and covers anything from prescriptions to eye health. I strongly recommend anyone that is dealing with a difficult eye condition to go ahead and visit Zachs for their next eye test. I am sure that you will not be disappointed.

Eyeglasses

The most obvious way to correct high myopia is through glasses. However, patients that are suffering from myopia should follow a few guidelines to ensure the best aesthetic and correctional outcome.

It is recommended to look for frames that are as small as possible while looking in proportion with the face shape. Rounder frames will help cover the thicker edges that come with high minus prescriptions, while a thicker frame, as opposed to rimless glasses, will help to hide the thickness of the lens. The thickness of the lenses can also be reduced by selecting High Index Lenses. Of course, there is no strict rule and anyone can pick any shape and color, but the above-mentioned guidelines will allow for a more desirable aesthetic as well as a visual outcome.

Contactlenses

When it comes to contact lenses for Highly Myopic patients, there are many different contact lens options. From normal contact lenses to toric contact lenses for those of us that are also suffering from Astigmatism.
